Piggy's fall reperesents the fall of intellectual, practical, and scientific thinking on the island. With his death came the death of the last trace of civilization on the island, seeing as all other boys turned to savagery under the leadership of Jack. Ultimately the boulder which killed Piggy also crushed any remaining hope of returning order and practicality to the group of boys.
