If Hollywood is producing a lot of 'R' rated films, it's because they're trying to meet public demand in specific age groups, mainly 18-35.

On average, R-rated movies have lower ticket sales per film than G-PG films, but are 3 times as likely to be nominated for Oscar and other film industry awards. This is one of the main reasons for the abundance of R-rated films.

G-rated films are generally geared toward children and produce quite a few mega-hits, but they are also very expensive to make and if they bomb they bomb big time. Children's films are also boring for most adults not obligated to watch the movies. R-rated films are mostly action films that appeal to a wide assortment of ages and both genders and they're cheaper to make than most R-rated films and often produce a nice, if smaller, profit. There's also a growing market for straight to video films produced overseas for a tenth the cost of an American or Canadian production. Wesley Snipes has made a nice tax-free living with these cheesy independents.

We have film ratings in case of the effect it'll have on viewers. For example: The reason they rate Horror movies an R (In the US) or a 15 or an 18 (in the UK) is, exactly what I said before, the effect/fright it could cause some people.

"R" means "restricted" only to be viewed by adults, the reason being that this particular movie is either to violent or too sexually graphic for young people to watch.

The makers did not submit it to the Motion Picture Association of America. This may work for DVD's, but most theaters will not show unrated films.
