according to both John Michael Teblak and Stephen Schwartz, the colwn costumes were based on a writing by Dr. Harvey COx of the Harvard Divinity School. In his book "Feast of Fools" , he talks of Christ as the clown. The basis of the costumes and the underlying theme of Godspell comes from the book's chapter, Christ as the harlequin.
