The creator of the Daleks, Terry Nation simply used his imagination to create the name 'Dalek'. He later discovered that in several European languages the name has significance. In Serbo Croatian the word 'dalek' means 'far' or distant' which is significant as they are from another planet. In Czech the word 'Dalekohledy' means 'distant viewing' and in other Eastern European languages similar words to 'dalek' also mean far or distant. In Swedish the word 'dalig' means bad and as mentioned in 'Doomsday' in 2006 'darlig' is Norweigan for 'bad'. Nation was interviewed by the Daily Mirro in 1964 and asked about the origin of the word 'Dalek' his reply was that he took it from the spine of a volume of an encyclopedia which read 'Dal - Lek'. However, he later admitted that this was something he made up as he had no other explanation.
