Oliver Otis Howard was a general who was on the side of the Union during the American Civil War. Some of the more famous battles he took part in were the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Gettysburg, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Howard was a recipient of the Medal of Honor.

First Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Seven Pines, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Chancellorsvile, Battle of Gettysburg, Battle of Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign, Shermans March to the Sea, and Carolina's Campaign.Oliver Howard died in Burlington, Vermont. He is buried there at Lake View Cemetery. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Oliver attended Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth Kents Hill School in Readfield, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19. He also attended United States Militiary Academy and graduated there in 1854. Howard was the author of numerous books after the war including (Donald's School Days in 1878) (Nez Perce Joseph in 1881) (General Taylor in 1892) (Isabella of Castile in 1894) (Autobiography in 1907) (My Life and Experiences among Our Hostile Indians in 1907). In 1857 he served in Florida against the seminole Indians. He retired from the army in 1894. he died when he was 78
