The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also voted him an honorary Oscar "for his many memorable screen performances and the international recognition he, as an individual, has gained for the motion picture industry." James Stewart, Cooper's longtime friend, accepted the honorary statuette on April 17, 1961 because was too ill with cancer. Cooper died a month later, on May 13, 1961.
