It partly depends on what you mean by the Beatles; the Quarrymen (which was Lennon's first band and which went on to become the Beatles) first performed in Woolton (a suburb of Liverpool) at a church Fete in 1957. It's one of the most significant events in music history as it was also when John Lennon met Paul McCartney.
In 1959, as the Quarry Men, they started playing at the Casbah Club in Liverpool which was run by Pete Best's mother. In 1960, as the Beatles, and with Pete Best as drummer, the played at the Indra Club in Hamburg for 48 nights, then at the Kaiserkeller for a further 58 nights. On their return to Liverpool, they play at the Cavern Club, followed by a return to Hamburg at the Top Ten Club, then back to the Cavern Club which is where Brian Epstein sees the Beatles for the first time, and the rest is history.
They played at a place called the Cavern Club. They kind of formed, actually, at a church social where Paul met John for the first time. The travelled back and forth to Germany also. In fact, when they returned to England, one time, many people thought they were German, a lot because of their hairstyle, and a lot because the billing read "Straight From Hamburg".I'm sorry, but the first part of this answer is really wrong. The Beatles played several club dates before they got into the Cavern Club. The group didn't play the Cavern until08/07/1957, and that was without Paul McCartney who was away at scout camp with his brotherMike. Between the day Paul joined the band (07/06/1957) and that date they played parties, clubs, and other events around Liverpool.

That would be Hamburg, in what was then West Germany.
Liverpool, England is famous for being the home town of the Beatles. Liverpool is known for several things... it was once the centre of the Slave Trdae and is currently the home of a museum dedicated to this era of its past. It was the 2008 European Capital of Culture and it is known for its "Three Graces," which are three iconic buildings which stand close to the River Mersey. In the 1960s it was known as the birthplace of the style of music known as Mersey Beat. It is also known as the birthplace of the Beatles pop group. Liverpool is the home of both Everton and Liverpool Football Clubs, both of which play in the English Premier League. Liverpool has many reknown public building, such as the Bluecoat school and St. Georges Hall. Liverpool also has many parks and its Ferry, which travels back and forth across the River Mersey is well known as a means of transport and it was also mentioned in the 1960s Jerry and the Pacemaker's hit single "Ferry Across The Mersey." Liverpool is also home to Britains oldest "China Town."
They played the music they enjoyed; they had an advantage in living in Liverpool - the transatlantic liners to dock in Liverpool and merchant seamen brought records from the USA. Another factor was the desire to be "different"; when a new record arrived, the local bands would cover it, but the Beatles would cover the B side - so they'd stand out from the other bands.
The Cavern Club was made famous because the Beatles played there when they were first starting out. This was also the place where Brian Epstein first heard the band play.
A Salvation Army Childrens home in Woolton, Liverpool, were John Lennon used to play, (in the grounds), as a child.
