Nagato is a former student of Jaraiya. When Jaraiya was fighting in the hidden Rain because of a war he met three kids and decided to look after them for awhile, one of them was Nagato. He was unwilling to teach them ninja techniques until the day he saw Nagato's rinnegan, the rinnegan were eyes that the sage of the six paths (creator of ninjas) had. Jaraiya was told his future and in it he was told he would teach the chosen child, which he thought was Nagato once he saw his rinnegan. Later Jaraiya leaves for several years, teaches Naruto and for the villages protection against Akutsuki he leaves to infiltrate the hidden rain where he fights "Pain" who is really Nagato controlling six different people and loses and then dies leaving a message for Naruto. Then Naruto fights Pain, defeats all six of the controlled bodies and finds the real Pain (Nagato) and changes his heart. Nagato goes from wanting to kill nearly everybody to giving life back to the lives he took from Konoha. Does Kakashi die on the show Naruto or Naruto Shippuden?
Yes, Kakashi does die during the battle against the Akatsuki. Although later Naruto manages to convince Pain to bring everyone back to life who died during the battle. So Kakashi is currently alive and breathing.
