At the end of Mockingjay, Katniss chooses Peeta instead of Gale, because, not only was Gale responsible for the indirect killing of Prim, her sister, she realizes that they both have too much "fire, kindled with rage and hatred," and that she needs Peeta because he is a "dandelion," which is Katniss' symbol of hope since eating dandelions saved her and her family's lives. Peeta can look at the bright side of things, and Katniss realizes that that's what she "can't survive without," not Gale's resentment towards the Capitol.
In the epilogue of Mockingjay, Katniss explains that, even though it took "5, 10, 15 years of convincing," she and Peeta have two children, "the girl with dark hair and blue eyes, and the boy with blonde hair and dark eyes," and although it's never actually written, it's implied that they're happily married.

"On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would've happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that." -Katniss Everdeen
