Danzo ordered Itachi to kill his clan or the destruction of the whole ninja world could occur. Itachi did without hesitation and then apparantly danzo took the sharingans of the many dead uchiha and put them into his arm and one in his right eye.
It say it in the manga he got it from Uchiha Shisui who is the guy Itachi is supected to have killed to get his Mangekyou Sharingan.

it is not yet known but there are theory's. One is that he dug up Obito and got the sharingan from him. no one from Konoha would do this so he could have gotten the transplant from orochimaru. but i think that is unlikely because orochimaru wanted the sharingan himself. This may not be true because Obitos body was completely crushed. Another theory is that orochimaru made a sharingan and gave it to danzo for testing purposes. But this is too far-fetched to believe. Another is that Danzo is Obito which would would explain why one of his sides is wrapped and he got a normal eye from somewhere else (Obito gave one of his eyes to kakashi.) but Obito would be too young because danzo held a grudge against the 3rd hokage. My theory is that Danzo has a connection with "tobi" or madara. tobi only shows one of his eyes through his mask so it is possible that madara gave his other eye to danzo in an agreement. I don't think that this is the case though. We will just have to wait and see.

How many saringan's are there?
Well, there are 3 types of Sharingan in the Naruto Universe. There is the 1-3 tomoe seal of the regular Sharingan, Mangekyo Sharingan which is a much more advanced and evolved form of the Sharingan which takes on an appearance unique to it's owner, but is a double edged sword so to speak in the fact that once it's awakened it starts to slowly deteriorate the users eyesight enevitably blinding them from the astonishing strain it puts on their eyes. Then there is the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan which is an everlasting Mangekyo Sharingan that may grant immortality which is obtained by taking anothers Mangekyo. (Its speculated that it can only be achieved by one taking their brothers, & only their brothers, sharingan.) SPOILERS: There were 4 people left with the Sharingan Kekkei Genkai. Including Madara "Tobi" Uchiha, Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha, and Kakashi Hatake. But since Itachi's recent death (due to a hidden unknown illness) there are only 3 who can use this ability. It should also be noted that through different ways all 4 characters have achieved evolving their Sharingans to the Mangekyo level (Only 5 characters in the Naruto Universe have been known to awaken this ability). While by implanting his brothers Mangekyo a long time ago Madara was able to obtain a legendary Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan Hey ypu forgot Danzo has like idk 18 sharingans in his arm, and one on his head that has the ability to control people. Why does Danzo become Hokage in Naruto Shippuden?
no Actually he does become the sixth hokage after Pain atacks Konaha Tsunade decides to retire and has Danzo become the temperate hokage. But i think he is over ruled by then Jonin because the jonin have the final say so and then the village decided to make Naruto Become Hokage. SO you were actually wrong awww tsunade ]:
