It all depends on how they planned to be successful. There are probably more successful bands out there.
Adding to that it, depends how you measure success in the music business. The Beatles are (perhaps surprisingly) only fourth on the list of all time most successful popular music acts.
Take a look at the list included in the related links section below, it might surprise you.
The Beatles were quite innovative, both in terms of their style and musical content. Lennon and McCartney, in particular, were very talented songwriters and good vocalists. They benefited enormously from their collaboration with George Martin, who provided them with the finest production, engineering and recording technology in the world at the time, as well as contributing to their compositions and arrangements. The Beatles took full advantage of the resources that they had and experimented continuously with the rapidly-evolving technology available to them.
Culturally, The Beatles consciously reflected and influenced the fashion and vocabulary of the period. They changed the role of music in the culture. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they avoided becoming stridently political; they could be considered rather conservative in not stepping too far outside their roles as entertainers. They generally maintained a positive outlook in their lyrics and (except for occasional blunders) avoided alienating any segment of their audience--all of which served to sustain their enormous popularity.
