The "star detective" in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is FBI agent Clarice Starling played by Jodie Foster. Foster won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 1992 Academy Awards for her portrayal. A "prequel" usually depicts what led up to the events in the original movie, but the events in Red Dragon have absolutely nothing to do with the events in The Silence of the Lambs.But the events in Red Dragon are supposed to take place before the events in The Silence of the Lambs. In the last lines of Red Dragon, either Dr. Chilton or Barney (I can't remember which but I'll check later) says something like, "There's a female FBI agent here to see you. Should I tell her to go away?" and Dr. Lector asks, "What's her name?" Presumably, Clarice Starling is her name.
