"Titanic" (1997), was not based on a book. The original screenplay was written by director James Cameron.

"A Night to Remember" (1958) was based on the book of the same title by Walter Lord.

The two films are very different.

A Night To Remember is a factually-based account of what actually happened during the disaster, written in 1958 when a number of Titanic survivors were still alive, including Second Officer Charles Lightoller. They were able to provide first-hand eyewitness accounts of their experiences and accurate recollections of the real event.

The 1997 film Titanic, whilst accurately reproducing the design and interior of the vessel, was based around a fictional love affair between two fictional characters. Neither Jack, Rose, Rose's fiancee, or the villainous Pinkerton played by David Warner ever really existed, and the film focused too strongly upon these pretend characters rather than upon those who were real and actually on the vessel. Also, although the film did contain some traumatic elements, it came nowehere near capturing the sheer terror, confusion, panic and horrible deaths endured by so many on board.
