Durin's Day indicates that the dwarves can open the door with the key on the last moon of Autumn.

Oin Gloin Balin Dwalin Fili Kili Dori Ori Nori Thorin Oakenshield Bifur Bofur Bombur There were three others mentioned by name, Thrain and Thror, Thorin's father and grandfather and Dain, his cousin. And there were at least 500 hundred others that arrive to fight in the last battle.

The eagles took Gandalf, Bilbo and the dwarves to the Carrock, "a great rock, almost a hill of stone, like a last outpost of the distant mountains, or a huge piece cast miles into the plain by some giant among giants" (The Hobbit, Chapter VII).
