It depends on how many one wizard or witch has. for example, Lord Voldemort had six and a seventh one he never meant to make which was Harry Potter. to be able to have a horcrux that person will have to murder others which will cause their soul to split. like Lord Voldemort, he split his soul into seven pieces. in the harry potter films, one by one they were destroyed. if a horcrux gets destroyed that witch or wizard will feel pain or die if only spliting their souls once. but Lord Voldemort as known as Tom Marvolo Riddle, was obsessed with not dying even at an early age causing him to create so many.
