Things further back will be cooler in color, smaller in general, and less detailed.

Things closer will be warmer in color, larger in general, and more detailed.

Line and value can be used to create the illusion of depth as well. Make good use of perspective.

The use of cast shadows will help it appear as if things are on top of one another. So layers and layers of things casting shadows could work (I have done this before and it can create an amazing illusion of depth).
