The Castle Rock wasn't scary to the boys in Lord of the Flies. They were frightened of the possibility that the beast was there. According to Jack it was the only place on the island which he and his hunters hadn't explored and it therefore seemed logical to assume that it was the lair of the beast. The boys were under the impression that the beast was a real creature with sharp claws and teeth, which had attacked Samneric, they genuinely believed it to be dangerous, reason enough to be scared of entering its lair.
