What did edward mean by you know what would happen anyway to the volturi?

I think he meant that they knew that even if theydidn't kill him ( or whatever it is you'd like to call it ) they would end up doing it in the end. Which explains the whole 'step into the sunlight so that the Volturi kill me' thing. :]
