Edward went to Italy because he thought Bella was dead and he couldn't live without her.He also wanted to die; the thought of life without Bella was unbearable, so he went to the Volturi to ask them to kill him.

edward thinks Bella died from jumping off the cliff into the water from Alice's vision of her dying from it (because she cant see werewolves and Jacob pulled Bella out of the water) so he goes to volterra to see the volturi. there he asks the volturi to kill him and they decline because they think his power (mind reading) would be great for the volturi. since edward is declined and wants to die anyway, he goes to a balcony in front of hundreds of humans in which he takes his shirt off to show his sparkling skin to the public so the volturi would kill him because those people don't know about vampires(the people were celebrating st Marcus day--st Marcus ridding the city of vampires but the vampires are still there). Bella rushes in time to save edward and shove him inside so no one would see him. long story short: Edwards wants to die.
