A fictional humanoid people in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Hobbits are some of the central and POV characters in the books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Other names for hobbits are Halflings, Hobyltan, and Periannath.

Hobbits are basically smaller humans, standing about 3 to 4 feet tall. (They are not a "magical" creature or "fairy".) Notable physical differences are their feet, which are hairy and with leathery soles so they normally go without shoes, and slightly pointed ears (although the last one is never mentioned in the narrative, only in a letter of Tolkien to an illustrator). They are fond of bright colors, many meals and a regulated and calm life, staying close to home.

Originally there were three kinds of hobbits: Harfoots, Stoors and Fallohides. They generally preferred different living habitats and had differing physical characteristics, for example the Stoors were the only hobbits that can grow beards. But towards the end of the Third Age (when the Hobbit and the LotR take place) they have long since mingled and moved away from their ancestral lands in the north. At the end of the Third Age there are two lands settled by Hobbits: the idyllic Shire, and in Bree-land (where they live alongsnde humans).

The Hobbit is a precursor to J.R.R Tolkien's epic fantasy tale The Lord of the Rings. It is an extremely popular novel to children and adults alike, following the story of a small creature known as The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, and his adventures with a group of thirteen dwarves and a wizard named Gandalf to reclaiming the Lonely Mountain from the grip of an evil Dragon named Smaug.

The Hobbit was first published in 1937. To date it has won the Carnegie Medal and a host of other critical acclaims. It remains one of the most loved children's stories of all time.

Hobbits are a fictional small (3-4ft tall) humanoid people invented by J.R.R. Tolkien. The word "hobbit" initially just came to him, but he later retroactively described it as being derived from Old English "holbytla", meaning "hole-dweller". If you take the word "holbytla" and subject it to all the sound changes from Old to Modern English, you actually arrive at the word "hobbit".

Hobbits are a little people, smaller than dwarves. The love peace and quiet and good tilled earth. They dislike machines but are handy with tools. They are nimble but don't like to hurry. They have sharp ears and eyes. They are inclined to be fat. They where bright colors but seldom where shoes. They love to eat (six meals a day) and drink and be merry. They live in The Shire, a place between the River Brandywine and the Far Downs in Middle Earth.

The four hobbits in the fellowship are Frodo, Pippin, Merry, and Sam.

Bilbo Baggins was another, and, in the book, Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger along with many other hobbits at the Long-Expected Party and the Scouring of the Shire.

Hobbits are a race like people or elves who live in a place called the Shire. There are three different types of hobbits: Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallowhides.

To quote Tolkien's letter to an illustrator (concerning Bilbo Baggins specifically): "I picture a fairly human figure, not a kind of 'fairy' rabbit as some of my British reviewers seem to fancy: fattish in the stomach, shortish in the leg. A round, jovial face; ears only slightly pointed and 'elvish'; hair short and curling (brown). The feet from the ankles down, covered with brown hairy fur. Clothing: green velvet breeches; red or yellow waistcoat; brown or green jacket; gold (or brass) buttons; a dark green hood and cloak (belonging to a dwarf)." (The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien, #27). Otherwise, read the parts about Hobbits included before the story in the book The Lord of the Rings.

Hobbits are very small people (on average, three and a half feet tall), normally on the heavy side (although not always), with big hairy feet and curly heads of hair, which is usually brown or blonde. They love to eat (they have six meals a day!) and enjoy going to parties, smoking pipes, gossiping, and giving away presents. They are a happy-go-lucky, carefree people that dislike anything out of the ordinary or unexpected.

Hobbits are characters in The Lord of the Rings...i would suggest reading the first few chapters in "The Hobbit" in detail as it gives a clear description of what Hobbits are.
