Harry's sock sets him free, he tricks Malfoy into giving it to him; spoiler alert: this piece of clothing becomes Dobby's favourite and thinks that they are suppose to be worn not as a pair but so they don't match each other and he make a pair for Harry latter on in the series ^.^
In the second book and the second film Dobby tells Harry Elves can be free if they are given cloths so Jarry takes Tom Riddles dairy and places his own sock inside of it amd forces Mr.Malfoy to take it back. He quickly gives it to Dobby so un knowing he gives him cloths setting him free

Harry placed his own sock in the diary that Lucius Malfoy had slipped into Ginny Weasley's cauldron at the beginning of the movie and gave the diary back to Lucius, who tossed it to Dobby. Harry told Dobby to open it and the elf found the sock within and since Lucius had thrown the diary to him, he unintentionally set him free.
Dobby catches a diary. In the chamber of secrets, Harry Potter takes his sock and pucks it inside of a diary. For a house elf to be set free, his/her master has to give them an article of clothing. Dobby's master lucious malfoy (draco's dad) throw the diary on the ground not knowing that there is a sock inside and tells Dobby to pick it up. When Dobby picks up the diary, he opens it and sees the sock. Technically since lusious "gave" him the diary with the sock he gave him an article of clothing thus setting him free
Well he is mainly in the 2nd one, which is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but he comes out and is mentioned later on in the series.
