It was claimed she was (evidentally totally) Blind between the ages of three and seven and she miraculously recovered her sight following a religious pilgrimage to Lisieux, Lourdes or some similar ( Faith Cure) site. I have reasons to doubt this, the French government certainly maintained an interest in handicapped citizens ( What of Louis Braille, who invented Braille) and there are health agencies that deal with this. She evidentally grew up in a thinly-veiled house of prostitution. one of the two stories is wrong. people can go blind from Congenital syphilis, and this is a grave matter. Of the two Piaf legends, I find the blind story harder to swallow, than the ( dirty night club) to put it politely. as far as is known she did not wear glasses, shades, or have any health aids one might associate with the visually impaired. sorry I don:t buy it.
