It's not a kind of thing to be made mandatory, but if kids want to see a whiny 14 year-old rip apart a bunch of eldritch abominations in a giant robot, that's fine. As long as they steer clear of EoE, they should be fine.

Neon Genesis Evangelion OP.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth was released first and consists of a recap and deleted scenes from the original broadcast (deleted scenes are included in renewal and platinum versions of the series) and the first half of a new plot replacing the last two episodes. Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion is the second movie consisting of the first half of a new plot replacing the last two episodes, which was also in Death & Rebirth and the second half of said plot, making Death & Rebirth obsolete if you have watched NGE renewal or platinum. Rebuild of Evangelion is a alternative version of the series consisting of 4 movies: 1. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone 2. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance 3. Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo 4. Evangelion: 4.0 (no official title yet)
Gundam, by a long shot. Neon Genesis Evangelion originally aired in 1995 and early 1996, with the manga debuting several months prior to promote the anime. The Gundam franchise, on the other hand, debuted in April of 1979 with the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.
Probably best to watch the whole series then the fantastic "End of Evangelion" movie. However, be aware that many people believe the movie is meant to "replace" the last few episodes of the TV series, as they end in rather different ways. Also, there is the re-build series of films (2 of which have already been released) which are meant to be an alternative to the timeline of the entire TV series, but they follow a similar plot to the show anyway.
Absolutely everybody on the planet except Shinji and Asuka. That happened in "End of Evangelion", though. The death list of the main series includes fifteen angels, Kaji, some military personnel, and a cat. Outside of the timeline and shown in flashbacks, Asuka's mother hangs herself and Ritsuko's mother jumps off a command center-ish area. I think they took her brain and put it in a machine she made. That's all that I can think of off the top of my head. I'm happy I spoiled the series for you, jerk.
