The meeting place was on a flat platform of rock, which was raised a little higher than the beach and projected someway into the lagoon. The rock platform had a thin layer of soil which allowed the palm trees to grow to a certain height before their shallow roots were no longer able to support them. These fallen palm trees provided benches for the boys to sit on during their assemblies.
The last group of boys to arrive at the first meeting in Lord of the Flies are a choir led by head boy Jack Merridew.
Jack called the meeting under the pretence of discussing the encounter with the beast on the mountain top but really with the intention of attempting to depose Ralph as leader and installing himself as the new leader of the boys.
Simon is first referred to (though not by name quite yet) as he faints in the first conch meeting.
In "Lord of the Flies," the morning meeting saw the boys willing to exhibit discipline and responsibility about what needed to be done to assure they worked together as a team, and did all they could to get rescued. By evening, Jack and the hunters return with their prey, and everything goes out of control. First of all, they let the signal fire go out, and when Piggy calls them irresponsible, Jack physically assaults him.
I suggest meeting you!
