When the boys first land on the island, they don't know where anyone is. The two characters first introduced in the novel are Ralph and Piggy. When wondering the island Ralph and Piggy come upon a conch shell, which Ralph blows through repeatedly on a platform on the island; then all the boys join them and have a meeting. The meeting place was on a flat platform of rock, which was raised a little higher than the beach and projected someway into the lagoon. The rock platform had a thin layer of soil which allowed the palm trees to grow to a certain height before their shallow roots were no longer able to support them. These fallen palm trees provided benches for the boys to sit on during their assemblies.
