While some people prefer to have background noise (such as music) going while they study, others prefer complete silence. And it also depends on the type of studying you're doing. For instance, someone studying simple math problems might be less distracted by music than someone studying advanced economics.

The key question to ask yourself is "Am I spending more time listening to the music than I am spending on my studies?" If the answer is yes, then you need to cut the music down or turn it off altogether.

The latest scientific information shows that some background noise usually does help most people "tune out" noises like traffic, construction, or people talking, and help them concentrate on what they are doing. However, this music should be slow to medium paced (not fast rock or heavy metal) and have no vocals or loud drum beats!

Music can affect you in a variety of ways. Depending on the type of music you listen to you can change your brain waves to make you achieve a higher state of awareness/concentration. Instrumentals are usually the best for studying/homework as (as long as decently light) they take you into the alpha brainwave state. You get your most heightened sense of awareness and concentration in this type of brainwave. Stay away from rough beats and lyrics as they can be distracting to your work.

Some people (I am one of them) cannot concentrate when it is too quiet around them. These people do benefit from having music playing quietly in the background while they work. Notice the emphasis on quiet - playing your favorite music loudly will just distract you from your work, and will have a negative effect on your studies. Sometimes it helps to play Classical Music or jazz - music without words - because many people key in when they hear words, and subconsciously focus to figure out what is being said.

Music calms me and I enjoy it, but for some people who get distracted very easily, then it would be quite a hard time trying to concentrate.

If you cannot listen to music without belting out the lyrics, humming along or bobbing your head to the beat. Then I recommend that you do not listen to music during a test. It can cause your mind to go else where and not pay full attention to your questions.

It has been generally accepted that if you listen to classical or baroque music that any comprehension relating to science or mathematics is improved. I have found that listening to any Beethoven Symphony (except the 9th), any Haydn Symphony, any late Mozart Symphony (19 - 41) and any Brahms Symphony has improved my memory while reading or composing music. There is a certain logic to the harmonics, melodies, & structure - almost like multi-tasking.

it is different for all people. some people can't have any noise when they study. for them, music would not be a good way to study. although, some people find that music provides enough background noise so that they don't get distracted. new songs are not good to listen to though because you will want to focus on that. also, your favorite songs can be bad too because you might want to sing along.

I personally think that listening to music puts you in a good mood when you don't really want to be studying, but at the same time I think music doesn't help with studying, and that it just distracts you and unfocuses you...

What do doctors say about listening to music?

In general, listening to music you like can have a positive effect on your health as it helps you to relax and distress, and can make you feel happy. Playing your own music can be very therapeutic and improve creativity and Sylvester, and also enhance social relationships if playing with other people. However, playing or listening to music too loud can have negative health effects, as it can damage hearing short term or, if you listen to loud music a lot, long term. Higher frequencies will have most effect on hearing, but very loud low frequencies can also make you feel quite nauseous as it causes your body and organs to vibrate. Music has been an integral part of every culture since the beginning of human civilisation; it brings people together and spreads messages and reminds you that you are alive. It has many more benefits than health risks but remember to take your earplugs with you when going to a club or gig, just to ensure you'll be listening to music for many more years to come!

Why is it important to listen to music?

Good music is calming and makes you comfortable, which is great for relaxation, study or reading. Commercial music stations with shouting announcers and hyperactive commercials have the opposite effect. Try a classical music station. My local - http://www.4mbs.com.au/ - streams on the inernet 24/7, and is very low key, with three sponsor's messages per hour. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes, just having comfortable music in the background. When you're feeling more lively, favourite CDs are good, and keep you upbeat, whatever the type of music.

Is music good for your brain or does it do harm?

Just because screamo, rock, heavy-metal, death-core, etc... are bad for some people that doesn't mean it's bad for all. Actually the only way I can fall asleep is by listening to screamo. The only way I do good on my home work is by listening to death-core. Really it only has a negative affect if you are weaker and really don't have control of your self.
