There`s a difference between the manga and the anime at this point.

In the manga Akito, who is introduced to the reader as a young man, turns out to be female. Her mother, who hated Akito, raised her as a boy, probably in order not to have any competition for Akiro`s, Akito`s father`s, affection (Akiro really loved Akito. In the anime Akito is introduced as male and remains male. I don`t think Ren, Akito`s mother, even appears in the anime.
