He kills em before the series starts. But, they show many flashback episodes, sorta as fillers to kinda fill in story plot. In a flashback episode detailing the events of that night, Sasuke mentions he is seven years old. However, the overall timeline is a bit uncertain due to conflicting statements made throughout the series.
A brief flashback to the massacre occurs in episode 84. A more detailed one occurs in episode 131, with events leading up to it occurring from the end of episode 128 through 130. These are both flashback's of Sasuke's. Itachi has his own flashback in Shippuden episode 135, and then there is another flashback to that night (Sasuke's again) in Shippuden 142. The whole story behind the massacre is explained in Shippuden episodes 140 and 141.

Itachi was 15 or so when he killed his clan, Sasuke was like 7-9 years when his clan got killed, and when Itachi appeared for the first time he was like 17-19, in shippuden like 20 something. and come on i mean, he being 15 in shippuden? O.o then naruto is just 9 years old and sasuke too O.o

∙ 14y agoThe Massacre is played quite a few times throught the series but the first time seen was in episode 84: Road, Chidori! Brother vs. Brother! The other times is in Sasuke Retrieval arc, where is has more of a family history towards the end of the arc right before Naruto fights Sasuke. The current last time is in the Hunt for Itachi arc, where the memories of the "happier days" before Sasuke kills his brother.
