hah WRONG! BOTH OF YOU!! itachi was ordered by danzo, and the three elders idiots. And he couldn't kill his little brother, cause he loved him too much. Later on, itachi was too ashamed to tell anyone the truth behind it all. However, sasuke later finds out from madara after sasuke kills itachi.
The Uchiha Clan was weakening ever since they failed to take the seat of First Hokage.
It weakened even further with the departure of their leader, Madara Uchiha. The Uchiha Clan planned a coup d'état to try and regain power, with Sasuke's father, Fugaku Uchiha, as leader. The Hidden Leaf Village caught onto this plot and placed a spy in the Uchiha Clan. That spy was Sasuke's older brother, Itachi. He acted as a double agent, passing information onto the Uchiha to the Hidden Leaf Village. The Hokage's advisors ordered Itachi to kill the entire Uchiha clan to prevent the Uchiha coup d'état to become the cause of The Fourth Great Ninja War. What Itachi saw in the last Great Ninja War turned him into a pacifist, wanting to keep peace at all cost. Itachi had to decide between his own clan, or the Hidden Leaf Village? And so, Itachi made his decision. He ultimately chose the Hidden Leaf Village to keep peace. On the night Itachi was to annihilate the Uchiha clan, he encountered Madara Uchiha and made a deal with him if Itachi helped him wipe out the Uchiha clan, Madara would have to promise not to attack Konoha, which he accepted. Itachi carried out his mission. In one night, Itachi and Madara wiped out the Uchiha Clan, except for one person Itachi could not kill, his precious little brother. Itachi's little brother, Sasuke, came home one night to find everyone dead, with Itachi standing over the bodies of dead Uchiha. Itachi told Sasuke, that he was not worth killing, to set Sasuke on the path of revenge.
To become a criminal, to be known as the traitor who murdered his own clan, to trade his brother's love for hate, and honor for disgrace, that was all part of Itachi's mission from the Hidden Leaf Village. After his mission was completed, Itachi appealed to the Third Hokage, asking him to protect his precious little brother Sasuke. To Itachi, Sasuke meant more to him than the entire Hidden Leaf Village. He then became an Akatsuki, to "spy on the organization from the inside", and prevent Akatsuki from attacking the Hidden Leaf Village.
Itachi was ravaged by disease and illness, prolonging his life with medication. He had to battle and die in front of his little brother Sasuke, so that Sasuke would be known as the "hero" who avenged the Uchiha Clan.
Sasuke set down the path of revenge turning to Orochimaru for more power, and eventually absorbing Orochimaru. Sasuke fought Itachi at the Abandoned Uchiha Hideout. As Itachi was nearly blind and suffering from disease, and after a prolonged fight with Sasuke, he died of exhaustion and finally gave in to his disease. After Sasuke was treated of his injuries, he was told the truth of the Uchiha Clan Massacre and Itachi's life by Madara. Realizing that his brother always loved him, and that he himself had killed his loving older brother, Sasuke awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan and vowed to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village for taking advantage of his brother.

This might be a spoiler, but Sasuke kills Danzo because him and the other elders around the third hokages. People ordered itachi to kill the uchiha clan. Itachi was only staying loyal to the leaf village, but he left Sasuke alive and told the hidden leaf to keep him safe.
