Azog was a goblin leader that Bullroarer Baggins killed by knocking his head off with a club. The head fell into a rabbit hole thus the story says, Bullroarer invented the sport of Golf.

Bandobras 'Bullroarer' Took killed Golfimbul - leader of the marauding orcs from Mount Gram. Azog was killed by Dain in the battle of Dwarves and Orcs. Azog was the father of Bolg - who led the orcs and wargs in the battle of Five Armies.

The term goblin is used on occasion in the first half of 'The Lord of the Rings,' and there is actually a goblin named Grishnákh in 'The Two Towers.' Goblin (English) and orc (Old English) are used interchangeably in Tolkien's writing, and sometime after the publication of 'The Lord of the Rings' Tolkien came to prefer the spelling ork.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In The Lord of the Rings the word "goblin" is not used, it appears only in The Hobbit. The words "orc" and "uruk hai" are used instead to refer to these creatures.

The origin of orcs is unclear. In The Silmarillion it is indicated that Morgoth somehow made orcs in mockery of elves and trolls in mockery of ents, but does not say how he made them. As none but Iluvatar has the true power to create independent living thinking beings, many people speculate that Morgoth somehow perverted captured elves and ents to breed orcs and trolls respectively from them, however Tolkien has explicitly stated that this did not happen. As orcs and trolls do both appear to have some level of true independence in thinking, perhaps Morgoth found a way to counterfeit Iluvatar's power of creation, as certainly Iluvatar would not have given life to Morgoth's evil servants as he did to Aule's dwarves earlier.

In my personal opinion I believe that Melkor (Morgoth's original name) "sang" orcs, trolls, and many other evil things into the "Music of the Ainur" before the beginning. As the song was already corrupted by this action, they like everything else in the song came into being as the world unfolded and Iluvatar could not "edit" them out without risking damaging his entire creation. Melkor's inspiration for his orcs was the elves he heard of in the song, for his trolls was the ents he heard of in the song, etc. making them thus a mockery of Iluvatar's intentions (as The Silmarillion says they were).

Azog is a powerful white Orc who claimed rulership over the abandoned Mines of Moria. He became the leader of the Goblins of Moria and initiated the War of the Dwarves and Orcs by beheading King Thror. The war had its climax in the Battle of Azanulbizar, where he killed Nain, only to be himself slain by Nain's son Dain, who would later become King of Durin's Folk.

Azog was the Chief of the Orcs of Moria. When Thror, the dwarf king of Erebor, looked to re-establish the lost kingdom of Khazad-dum, he encountered the goblins there and was captured and taken before Azog. Azog accused him of thievery and tortured for two days before Thror admitted there was another dwarf with him. Thror defied Azog when he called Moria the "halls of Durin" and was beheaded. Azog carved his name on Thror's forehead and tossed it out onto the steps, along with his body. Azog called out to Nar, the other dwarf and told him that the Orcs now ruled Moria and that any dwarf beggar that dared return would meet Thror's fate. Nar was barred from retrieving Thror's head, and he was tossed a small bag of coins (reiterating the view of the Orcs that the dwarves were beggars and not the rightful inhabitants). As Nar fled, he heard the orcs hacking apart what was left of Thror's body so that he could be fed to the birds.

The remaining dwarfs, led by Thror's son, Thrain, sought revenge and started the War of Dwarves and Orcs. Azog was killed by Dain Ironfoot after Azog killed Nain, his father.

In the recent adaptation, Azog is given a larger role, possibly to create a more personal antagonist for Thorin, so that he can gain vengeance for his family.

He is never called anything other than The Great Goblin. Tolkien never named him beyond that.
