Well, The story goes like this ...
Before they were in a band together, Matt, Dom and Chris (The members of Muse) were in different bands. According to Matt, Dom was in quite a good band, but the one he was in was a bit rubbish. Matt made friends with Dom and became the guitar player in his band. They didn't know Chris back then. After Matt joined, the called themselves 'Carnage Mayhem', then changed their name to 'Youngblood' and then they used a name given by Dom's sister, 'Gothic Plague'.
Gothic Plague split up, and only Matt and Dom were left. Matt thinks they split because of him! Matt and Dom decided to carry on with the band, but they needed a bassist and backing vocalist, so they asked Chris (who played drums at the time) if he would learn bass and join. Chris said yes.
The three met some weird girls at their hometown in Teginmouth, Devon (That's in the UK if you're not from here), and they dressed them up and stuff. They entered a 'battle of the bands' competition to take the mick out of other bands doing it,but they won, and Matt said in an interview 'we didn't expect to win, we were just taking the mick really, we had girls on the stage naked and what not,'. In the competition they called themselves 'the Rocket Baby Dolls' after a porn film they'd watched.
After they won, they decided to take it seriously, and changed their name to Muse. They were around 16, so, to answer your question, Muse started about 1995, but they released their first album in 1999.
