Dan just had to see it for himself and waited for him at the studio door entrance. Lt. Dan still had not come to terms with his disability and his anger consumed him. He had laughed at Forrest's dream of following Bubba's plans of becoming a shrimp boat captain, telling Forrest, "The day that you become a shrimp boat captain, I'll be your first mate." Later in the movie, after Dan had accepted his situation, he lived up to his word, joining Forrest down in Bayou La Batre.
