In the first book, she is very unsure and mostly doubts that she will win until farther along in the games as she watches people kill each other and her opponents die off until it is only her and Peeta. In the second book, she is slightly more confident, but a bit shakey after having found out she must go back and realizing that only one tribute will win this time and the arena is specially made to be more difficult to survive than ever before.

Katniss doubts her chances of winning The Hunger Games because, for one thing, she comes from the worst district. District 12 had only had one winner of the seventy-four years of The Hunger Games: Haymitch. On top of this, those participants from Districts 1 and 2 (the Careers) train for The Hunger Games for their whole lives. They prepare for years so they can bring honor to their districts. Katniss has no preparation for The Hunger Games, so what chance does she really have of winning?
