He actually escpaed in a rowing boat, he had been transfered from the mainland prison to an island prison and monitored that when there were storms the boats that brought supplies and things into the prisons cast off there smaller row boats, life boats and left them rather than lose them in the storm - he carved a hole in the wall of his cell like the film shows but then rowed to turkey - from there he swam across the border into Greece and was picked up by the American embassy from greek military custody.
