How did One Direction start the band?

They all auditioned for the UK 2010 X Factor as 'Solo Artists' When they were at bootcamp they were each told they had not made it through that stage. They each got called back and asked to form a band between the five of them. They then made it through to the finals where they came 3rd. Simon Cowell called them and asked if they wanted a 'Record Deal' and they said 'YES'.

In 2010, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan applied as solo candidates for the seventh series of The X Factor, but failed to qualify for the "Boys" category. After suggestion by guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, the five were put together to form the band One Direction, thus qualifying for the "Groups" category. :)

They auditioned individually for X Factor and they all got through but when it came to boot camp they had to dance instead for sing and they all had trouble with it so they got eliminated but just before they went home one of the produces called them back into the studio and one of the judges said that they are not going to go home and they were put together in a group by Simon Cowell and Harry Styles, the youngest member of One Direction thought of the name One Direction. Now they are the most popular boy band on this planet!!

They all first individually auditioned for the singing competition, "The X-Factor UK". When they were eliminated after boot camp, the judges called them up again and told them that they were back in the competition, but instead of being individuals, they were placed in a band. Later, Harry Styles, (a band member) decided that the band name should be called, One Direction! That was how One Direction was formed. This happened on July 23rd, 2010.
