The Mirror of Erised (desire spelled backwards) was a magic mirror that showed the looker their heart's deepest desire. Some lookers had trouble remembering that what they were viewing was not real, and were said to have wasted away from in front of the mirror. Dumbledore also used the mirror to help hide the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) stone.

The Mirror of Erised showed anyone who looked into it their deepest desire. The only exception is if one was perfect and free of desire. He or she would see his or her own reflection exactly as himself or herself.

The Mirror of Erised is placed to guard the Philosophers (or Sorcerers) Stone by Dumbledore after Harry is known to have been visiting there every night. After the first book it is only mentioned in conversations between Harry, Ron and Hermione but doesn't mention what happened to it.

Albus Dumbledore modified the Mirror of Erised and hid the philosopher's stone inside. Only somebody who wanted the stone, but didn't want to use it, could get the stone from the mirror. Professor Quirrell wanted the stone for selfish reasons and so was unable to get it, but the mirror gave it to Harry because he wanted to protect it.

This meant that Lord Voldemort didn't get the stone and couldn't return to power.
