It means that, the first time he met her, he loved/liked her. (at least in my opinion)
Well, I think it means, Edward was going to kill her the first day he met her. But he didn't... It means that it's Bella's fate to die ever since Edward came into her life, and everyday they're fighting against fate to live.

The turning point is when Bella is with the Cullens in a field during a thunderstorm while they play baseball and 3 vampires appear. Edward, who can read minds, sees James' plan, and is desperate to keep Bella safe. Laurent, who is tired of James' games, decides to leave James' group, and leaves. And so, the hunting begins.
