Well, I think it means, Edward was going to kill her the first day he met her. But he didn't... It means that it's Bella's fate to die ever since Edward came into her life, and everyday they're fighting against fate to live.

Edward, who can read minds, sees James' plan, and is desperate to keep Bella safe. Laurent, who is tired of James' games, decides to leave James' group, and leaves. And so, the hunting begins.
