Could simply just be dirty. Put the gate down, and unscrew the back of the handle. Once you unscrew the tail gates handle. then unscrew the ends where the latchs are. Then you should be able to pull the latchs out and clean them.
Just clean the handle and latchs and it should be fine. I know mine needed it.
The tailgate latch comes off with the cable. It is one piece.
How do you repair drivers side door latch mechanism on 98 GMC extended cab pickup?
The remote won't open the back tailgate latch in 1997 gmc jimmy. I can't find owner's manual. How do you manually open the back window?
remove the panel from the gate (it may be difficult if the gate is still closed). there is a metal panel held w/ screws; remove that panel and the latch will be visible. pull both rods at the same time to unlatch the gate (careful, the space is small and the truck loves to pinch!).
if you're referring to the tailgate latch, you 'll likely need to replace it. it isn't hard, i did this on my 1987 S15 jimmy, i just found it to be a pain moving the window latch aside without removing it completely
No, a GMC pickup has a higher towing capacity, and is just light years better than a Chevrolet. Overall, buy a GMC!
I assume you want to change the oil in your truck. To do that, what you need to do is disregard all that anyone has told you up until now. The easy way to do it is to drop the tailgate and locate the drain plug located right next to the tailgate latch on the drivers side.
Needs new abs pump. Pull fuse in mean time.

On my 2002 avalanche, I was told to take the handle off and inside there are to blue or green clips with threaded rods in them. I just popped open the clips with a small screwdriver, then moved the rods out a few threads and reclip. IT WORKED GREAT MY TAILGATE WOULD POP OPEN WHEN I HIT A BUMP BUT NO MORE!!
