If you're charged with reckless driving your case will most likely be presented to a court of limited jurisdiction. A court of limited jurisdiction deals only with certain types of cases like bankruptcy, family matters, etc. This is as opposed to courts with general jurisdiction.

Is careless the same as reckless?

The exact difference depends upon the wording of the laws of the state involved. There is no universal definition of careless or reckless driving that covers every state in the US. In NJ, under NJSA 39"4-97, careless driving is defined as driving carelessly or without due caution and circumspection, in a manner so as to endanger, or be likely to endanger a person or property. Reckless driving under NJSA 39:4-96, is defined as driving heedlessly, in wilfull or wanton disrefard of the rights or safety of others, in a manner so as to endanger or be likely to endanger, a person or property. Reckless driving is the more severe of the two and carries the higher penalty.

Is it legal to travel down a road in reverse as long as you're following the direction of traffic?

While I couldn't fine a specific law against reverse driving, you would probably be pulled over for reckless driving. (: Most jurisdictions have a sort of "cover all the bases" bad driving law, usually called something like careless and imprudent driving. If a police officer feels that whatever you're doing is likely to cause an accident, you can be pulled over and ticketed for this, even if there isn't a specific law covering precisely what it was you were doing. Driving with your feet, driving while barefoot, driving in reverse, or driving from the passenger seat are all things that could result in you being charged with C&I.

Is a reckless driving offense going to keep you from becoming a police officer?

Very likely. One of the requirements of the local PD in my city is a clean driving record. A minor traffic violation or two won't always keep you off the force, but anything beyond a minor violation almost always will.
