The gallbladder is a storage place for bile. Bile is made in the liver. The purpose of bile is to help digest fats. For different reasons, sometimes the gallbladder must be removed surgically. Usually the reason is because of gallstones (this can be painful!). The surgery is fairly simple with minimal risks. The only change in lifestyle is that you should be more careful not to eat high fat meals, because you don't have the extra reserve of bile to break the fat down. The liver will still make bile, and the bile will still break the fat down, but it will take more time than if you had a normal, healthy gallbladder. Hope this helps!
