YouTube was started in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees—Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim—in San Mateo, California. It was incorporated on April 23, 2005, as a privately held company, and later moved its headquarters to San Bruno, California. YouTube, LLC is currently owned by Google Inc., which bought it on October 9, 2006 for US$1.65 billion; Google's stated intention was to "make YouTube the next Google".
