They were different and had no known rights, and the white people did not want to work on their own plantations or hire other white people.
Because of the fact that the black didn't have any known rights in America, it was easy to force them to work there without need to pay them.
It was, however, punishable to force a white person to work on your plantation without giving him money for it.
