People from England had no idea how to survive working in the fields in the hot Georgia sun. Africans could work in those fields and not get skin cancer. As a result Oglethorpe allowed the importation of slaves so Georgians could have field hands. (In later years many southern planters would go to Newport, Rhode Island, after planting season and leave their slaves to fend for themselves all summer long, and then return for the fall cotton harvest. The humble cottages became mansions but retain the name of cottage.
