Early versions of the M-16 had mechanical/ammunition problems that caused jamming and cost several Americans their lives. The AK-47 has very loose tolerances (parts did not fit together very precisely). This allowed a little bit of dirt/sand in the weapon to NOT interfere with shooting. The M-16 has very tight tolerances, and even a little bit of dirt in the workings can cause it to malfunction.
