When was it illegal to be gay?

It depends on what country and what year you are talking about. For example, as of 2013, it's still illegal to be gay in:Africa1 Algeria2 Angola3 Benin4 Botswana5 Burundi6 Cameroon7 Comoros8 Egypt9 Eritrea10 Ethiopia11 Gambia12 Ghana13 Guinea14 Kenya15 Lesotho16 Liberia17 Libya18 Malawi (enforcement of law suspended)19 Mauritania20 Mauritius21 Morocco22 Mozambique23 Namibia24 Nigeria25 Sao Tome26 Senegal27 Seychelles28 Sierra Leone29 Somalia30 South Sudan31 Sudan32 Swaziland33 Tanzania34 Togo35 Tunisia36 Uganda37 Zambia38 ZimbabweAsia, including the Middle East39 Afghanistan40 Bangladesh41 Bhutan42 Brunei43 Iran44 Kuwait45 Lebanon46 Malaysia47 Maldives48 Myanmar49 Oman50 Pakistan51 Palestine/Gaza Strip52 Qatar53 Saudi Arabia54 Singapore55 Sri Lanka56 Syria57 Turkmenistan58 United Arab Emirates59 Uzbekistan60 YemenTwo Asian/Middle Eastern countries are listed separately by the ILGA under the heading "Legal status of homosexual acts unclear or uncertain":In Iraq, there is no law against homosexual acts, but homophobic violence is unchecked and self-appointed sharia judges reportedly have imposed sentences for homosexual behavior. In India, enforcement of the law against homosexual activity has been suspended by court action.Americas61 Antigua & Barbuda62 Barbados63 Belize64 Dominica65 Grenada66 Guyana67 Jamaica68 St Kitts & Nevis69 St Lucia70 St Vincent & the Grenadines71 Trinidad & TobagoIn the United States, anti-sodomy laws were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003, but they are still on the books in 13 states: Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Virginia. Conservative state legislators refuse to repeal the laws and, in some cases, police still enforce them. Reportedly, in the past few years more than a dozen LGBT people were arrested for violating those laws, but the arrestees were freed because prosecutors won't seek convictions based on defunct laws.Oceania72 Cook Islands73 Indonesia (Aceh Province and South Sumatra)74 Kirbati75 Nauru76 Palau77 Papua New Guinea78 Samoa79 Solomon Islands80 Tonga81 TuvaluEurope82 Northern CyprusAlso in Europe and worth mentioning but not on that list of countries with laws against homosexuality are:Russia, which enacted a law in 2013 prohibiting any positive mention of homosexuality in the presence of minors, including online;Ukraine, which has considered, but so far has not adopted a similar law against "gay propaganda."Moldova, which adopted and then repealed such a law in 2013.

Is it legal for a 16 year old to date a 20 year old trans-gendered male?

It is legal to "date" anyone you want to in most western countries, the issue arises when it comes to sexual relationships, to engage in such activities you must be, or be older than, the age of consent in your area. I can confirm that a UK citizen must be over 16 to engage in any sort of sexual activity and anyone doing such with those defined as "minors" are breaking the law and liable for prosecution which can result in time being served in prison, depending on the age of the offender and the age difference. In my country (the UK) once you reach the age of 16, you can do what you want with who you want; there is no different rules for gay, lesbian or transexual relationships. Across the World there are many laws regarding when you may engage in sexual activities, in countries that require marriage, this sort of relationship would almost certainly be illegal and as such you could neither date nor engage in sexual acts with such a person legally. In other places the age varies and can be as low as 13 in some countries but is usually between 16 and 18. Being transgender in some countries is illegal and sexual acts between such people may be deemed as homosexuality, fetching sentences as harsh as life in prison or even death in strictly Muslim countries like Sudan or Iran. This is only a rough guide, it is advisable to check the law regarding this issue in your area of residence.
