It was made in 1961. That's the year mine was made with the same format, and I have the original dated sales receipt and paperwork from Browning.
The number preceeding the L in the serial number denoted the year, but there was no letter preceeding it in 1961. EX: Serial number 2L XXXX was mfg. in 1962, 3LXXXX in 1963, etc.
Those made in 1959 had the same system at 9L XXXX, but those mfg. in 1969 changed format to XXXX 9L and followed that format through the end of their manufacture. I don't know what they did in 1960, but I assume it was 0L XXXX.
The examples I've given have 4 digits following or preceeding the date, but I believe they went to 5 digits by the mid 60s. Just what I've noticed from those I've seen.
