Don't drink anything that has calories. Liquids won't fill up your stomach and satiate you, so liquids that have calories are just empty calories. Except for milk, of course. Milk is very, very good for you. It's not just empty calories. But, you should drink skim milk only.

Don't drink juice (fruit has the same calories and will help fill your stomach), lemonade, iced tea (unless it's diet iced tea), non-Diet Soda, non-diet Red Bull, etc. Coffee has very, very few calories so it's fine, as long as you only use skim milk and a little bit of sugar (or the fake sugar).

Other than that, you just need to exercise regularly, and eat regular-sized portions of nutritious, balanced meals. If you have a problem with portion control, it might be a good idea to eat those Lean Cuisine-type meals for awhile. They will help you get a sense of what normal portions of food are.

Don't deprive yourself of foods that you love; just eat them in moderation. Allow yourself a dessert when you want one, but, just one candy bar, or one piece of cake. Eat slowly and remember to drink water with your food. It's very easy to overeat because the brain does not receive the signal that your stomach is full, and create the feeling of fullness, until about 10 or 15 minutes after you are full. So if you eat slowly, you will realize you are full in time to stop eating.
