if your boyfriend is having family problems you should help him out , let him talk to you.. although he may not want to talk about it don't keep pushing for him too talk, people cope with things differently. His mood may change and he may act different towards you ( this may not be 100% true just what happened with me). You can't do a lot in a situation like this you can just be there for him and take his mind of it sometimes , maybe give him something to look forward to or something else to set his mind towards?
