It causes serious damage escpecially if switched on.

Water can conduct electricity and can bridge circuits, causing the wrong voltage to be applied to the wrong parts, causing them to fail.

Long term, water causes corrosion which can rot through the copper tracks on the board.

If you are lucky and the computer is switched off at the time, remove the battery immediately, do not try switching it on to see if it works.

Dry the computer and battery separately and gently. Put on paper towels on a radiator or leave under a strong light. Remove any panels underneath to aid air flow and drain excess water out.

Make sure it is entirely dry before re-assembly and testing.

Switch it off. Drain the water out. Leave it to dry for a few days. When you are sure it's dry, switch it on again. If it smokes, switch it off and take it to a computer shop.
