Very interesting question- would be great for a debate issue. Personally, I can't live without mine. I store all my information, my appointments, etc. on my phone. Not to mention I can communicate with everyone almost everywhere. In our modern society, simplicity seems to be the key selling point for any product, and cell phones have dramatically altered the way that society interacts with one another. In 5 minutes flat any person can change their Facebook status, check the weather, find out exactly where their friends and family are, and even see what movies are playing at the local theatre. That's just the convenience aspect of a mobile phone. A lot of people choose to have a mobile phone just because of the security that comes hand in hand with them. Should there ever be an emergency, you can dial 911 on your phone from nearly anywhere instead of running to the nearest pay phone. Or if you happen to witness an accident or even be in one, emergency personnel can track down your exact location to ensure you get help right away instead of playing phone tag with an operator. But, there are also disadvantages to having a phone. It is theorized that the waves that are emitted from cell phones can be harmful to people. Possibly even cancerous. Not to mention, depending on the phone that you're considering it can also be very expensive.
All in all, I'm more on the side of phones being a good thing. But if you're a critic that still likes some extra security, look at getting a simple pay as you go phone with the very minimum monthly charge. In the event of something going wrong, I know I'd rather have a phone on me than not.
