The maximum RANGE- how far a rifle can fire a .243 cartridge- is about 4.5 miles.

However, the EFFECTIVE RANGE- distance one can reliably hit a target, is much less. It will vary according to the rifle, however, the .243 is based on the .308 Winchester cartridge, a very accurate round. In a properly sighted rifle, under the right conditions, it may have an effective range of 500-600 meters, or more.

An ethical hunter will typically not attempt shots at that range to avoid wounding a game animal.
