An SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) is essentially a document used to instruct HOW something is performed where a protocol is used to define a set of rules or regulations associated with a specific area or system. An SOP is used to instruct HOW to write a protocol.

Basically both are the documented guidelines by stating the purpose, responsibility, referance, method & record.... etc. But purpose of both document is different;

SOP: Define the method to perform the activity which need to follow.

Protocol: Define the paln to conduct the study which may be Approved or Rejected.
